The Ivan Allen College Student Advisory Board decided to give a scholarship to one IAC undergraduate for summer 2020. The scholarship was in the amount of $800 and was meant to help students who may have needed extra funding during their summer 2020 internship.
The selected recipient was Rachel Dekom! Rachel is a fourth-year History, Technology, and Society major! Here are a few words from Rachel:
"This summer, I am working as the Research and Advocacy Intern for Carrie's Closet of Georgia. For the past few months, I have been working on researching and drafting a Foster Child Bill of Rights for the state of Georgia. This has involved countless hours of locating and reading through legislation and leading focus groups with various stakeholders. I'm proud to say that Carrie's Closet now has a draft FCBR with five general categories of foster child rights.
The pandemic has shifted my internship to a completely virtual format, meaning my computer has become my favorite coworker. This means a lot of Zoom meetings with my boss, and a lot of work trying to facilitate virtual focus groups with the different stakeholders in the bill, like social workers, educators, and foster parents. I have learned how to be a better and more efficient communicator and also how to stay focused while working independently because of the shift to a virtual setting."
